The beat goes on along the surf line! Mixed size blues chasing small baits up and down the beach. Fluke are still being taken, but the trick is getting passed the bluefish. Thin and small metals are doing the trick on the blues, bucktail gulp or bucktail squid combos will work on the flatties... John Yac

Judging by the action right now in the surf, you would never think it's only mid August! Rain fish and peanut bunker seem to be everywhere and hot on their tails are some nice cocktail to tailor size blues. Reports of short to keeper size bass here and there are also coming in. Fluke are also still being taken around the inlet area. Add to that the always elusive Spanish Mackerel are also being reported. We had a boat come in yesterday with some nice blow fish taken in the area of the BB buoy. Crabbing out back remains ok with the best catches coming at first light and through the early morning hours. Snappers seem to be increasing in size also... John Yac

Well no more crazy bass action out back yesterday! It was business as usual, weeding through a bunch of short crabs to put a decent size catch together. Small snapper blues are still around. The beach is producing some nice 1 to 3 lb. blues along with a few keeper fluke. The blues are taking cut mullet, and small chunks of bunker, while small metals and small poppers will also do the trick. The fluke are hitting killie squid combos in the natural bait department while bucktail gulp combos still seems to be the top producing method for these flatties. We heard about some blow fish being taken in the area of the BB buoy, for those who don't know where that is its located, it's just off Forked River in Barnegat Bay. We have clam chum logs and all the salted clams you need!... John Yac

Striped Bass off the dock!! Sounds crazy for this time of year doesn't it? It all started yesterday morning when a crabber out back walked in with a 24" bass he caught in a large box trap, after supporting his story he promptly released the fish unharmed! I know anything can happen while fishing or crabbing, but that was only the start! Not long after a crabber caught a 31" bass on a drop line that the fish swallowed. Shortly after a school of bass surfaced just off the dock well within casting range chasing some kind of small bait fish. This lasted but a couple of minutes and all was over like nothing happen. Who knows what today will bring?... John Yac

If the availability of all kinds of different baits in the surf at this time of year means anything, one thing I do know, game fish love to feed on the smorgasbord that they provide. Fluke, snapper to cocktail size blues and the occasional small bass are all enjoying this vast array of bait right now in the surf. This spells some great light tackle action. Speaking of which the albies are just around the corner if not here already!... John Yac
